All For Kids

At Carlsbad Shores Dentistry your children are our highest priority. Our goal is to provide a lifetime of healthy teeth through a focus on prevention. Our brand new office is modern and equipped to provide the highest level of comfort and care to your child during our visit.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children have their first visit to the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months after the first tooth appears.

What to expect on your child’s first dental visit:

For all children our goal is to keep your child comfortable on your first visit and for all future visits. Doctors and the entire staff want this to be as stress free and fun as possible for the entire family.

Under the age of 3

A “well baby check-up” during which your child will become familiar with the dental setting. It is best to have established a relationship with the dentist when your child is not having problems to ensure they have a positive association with dental check-ups.

During the visit we will complete a comprehensive exam to evaluate growth and development, oral hygiene, status of cavities, or other problems. This exam may be in the chair, but usually it is in what we describe as a lap exam (a knee to knee position with the Doctor). This way he or she can see you the whole time and the Doctor can perform the exam. We will provide guidance for cleaning your child’s teeth at home, any habits that he/she may have, and about common dental injuries. Generally x-rays are not necessary at this visit. At the end of the visit we will discuss treatment if necessary and schedule the next check-up.

Over the age of 3

At this age most children will sit in the chair on their own, but they are some that will not be ready for a chair exam and need more time, in this case we will perform a lap exam. The Doctor will decide which method is best for your child on the day of your visit.

Most children three and over will have a comprehensive examination, a cleaning, a fluoride treatment (if indicated), and digital x-rays (if indicated). After this you will have an intensive conversation with the Doctor concerning their findings and they will discuss a treatment plan with you. Usually no dental treatment is performed on the first visit unless urgent treatment is indicated based on the Doctor’s findings. At future visits the cavities will be treated using an approach this is best for your child.
